United States: – Disappointing forecasts

The emergence of the omicron variant has once again accelerated the spread of infection in the United States, which on Monday registered a new world record with over 1.1 million cases of infection in one day.

Recently, an average of 700,000 daily cases of infection have been registered in the country, somewhat the health service has felt the aftermath of. Earlier this week, a new record was set in the number of people admitted with covid-19, when as many as 145,982 people were admitted to American hospitals with the virus.

After several weeks of grim milestones, many wanted to see the arrows point in the right direction. But on Wednesday, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) came out with several gloomy forecasts for the coming month.

Increase in deaths

Given the contagion situation in the country, the CDC predicts that the number of deaths will increase in the coming weeks.

The Infection Control Agency estimates that as many as 62,000 people will die with covid-19 next month. This means an average of 2624 corona-related deaths every day – an increase of 1000 cases from the current average, writes CNN.

A total of 866,882 people have died with covid-19 in the United States, according to recent figures from Worldometers.

The number of hospital admissions is also forecast to increase for the eighth week in a row, where between 17,900 and 48,000 new hospital admissions are expected on 4 February.

However, the CDC has not included the number of suspected cases in the latest forecasts, and thus gives no indication of how many cases one can expect in the USA in the next four weeks.

The disappointing forecasts were published the same day that a US research team published its uplifting results. The preliminary results of the study, which includes 70,000 corona patients in California, show that there is a significantly lower risk of hospitalization and death compared to the delta variant. The study has not yet been peer-reviewed.

Hospital in kneeling position

The expected increase in the number of hospital admissions and deaths comes at the same time as the country’s health care is on its knees.

In many places, hospital capacity has already exploded. This applies, for example, in New York, where 40 hospitals have been asked to stop unnecessary operations for at least two weeks due to few available hospital beds. The situation worries Steve Stites, chief medical officer at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

– At some point we are too overwhelmed to do our daily work. At that point, we need to choose which patients to help. And that may mean that we have to let people we could have saved in the first place die, he said CNN Saturday.

In addition, about 24 percent of the country’s hospitals face a “critical staff shortage”. As a result, hospitals in several states have asked infected nurses to work.

California is among the states hardest hit by the new wave of infections. The increase in infection has led to large sickness absence among employees in the emergency services, and the city of San Francisco is so critical of the situation that residents are asked not to call 911 (ambulance emergency number, journ.anm.) unless strictly necessary, to avoid further strain.
