Washington: The United States is about to develop an atomic bomb 24 times more powerful than the one dropped on Japan during World War II. The US Department of Defense has stated that the B61-13, a modern version of the B61 nuclear gravity bomb, is being developed. The Department of Defense has said it expects the US Congress to give permission to proceed with nuclear bomb development.
Similar to the B61-13, the B61-7 has a warhead of 360 kilotons. The atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan during World War II had a yield of about 15 kilotons. The US says the B-61-13 is 14 times larger than the 25 kiloton bomb dropped on Nagasaki.
Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy John Plumb said the new announcement is a result of the current security situation in the world and threats from adversaries. John Plumb also said that the United States has a responsibility to provide necessary assistance to its allies and to resist attacks.
