In recent days, the inhabitants of Cape Town have experienced a violent stench. The authorities launched an investigation to find out what the violent smell was coming from, write The Guardian.
They first assumed that a sewage system was to blame, but then found out that the smell was coming from the harbour. There was a ship loaded with 19,000 live cows on its way from Brazil to Iraq.
Zahid Bardroodien, head of water and sewage in the city, wrote on social media that “the smell of sewage that ravaged parts of the city” came from the ship that was loaded with cattle, writes The Guardian further.

Animal welfare groups say that the “unthinkable” smell shows how badly the animals on the ship are doing, and criticize the animal traffic from one continent to another.
– This smell indicates the cruel conditions in which the animals live. They have already been two and a half weeks on board the boat traveling, with faeces and ammonia, writes the SPCA, The National Council of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, in a statement, writes The Guardian.
The South African party Democratic Alliance also criticizes the long-term transport of live animals.
