Unheard of Wedding Calls, This Frog Choose to Wave All Pages

KOMPAS.comFrog usually uses his iconic voice to attract the attention of the opposite sex.

But sometimes this vocalization cannot compete with loud sounds coming from the surrounding environment, for example a waterfall.

The results are several species frog has also developed additional techniques of attracting the opposite sex using physical movements.

As quoted from Gizmodo, Friday (22/1/2021) this behavior is known in the species of Ecuadorian frog, Sachatamia orejuela glass frog. This finding is the first known example of this species.

Initially, the researchers intended to catalog the unprecedented call Sachatamia orejuela.

Researchers visit ecuador rainforest to record that call. As a result, the researchers managed to record their distinctive vocalizations.

Further analysis showed that Sachatamia orejuela produced marriage call at a higher frequency compared to other glass frog species.

However, while recording the call, the research team accidentally discovered something interesting.

The male frog is seen making a rapid waving motion, accompanied by leg movements and an occasional head swing.

This behavior doesn’t just happen once. Rebecca Brunner, lead author of the study and also a student at UC Berkeley observed that other males did the same.

Together the male frogs make high-pitched mating calls plus physical movement.

According to Brunner, this can increase the ability of frogs to be more noticed by the opposite sex in a noisy environment.

In fact, a similar strategy has also been documented in frogs that live in India, Borneo and Brazil.

“A number of other frog species around the world use high-pitched calls and visual signals to communicate in very noisy environments,” said Brunner.

However, these species are not related to each other. That is, the behavior is likely to have evolved independently in response to the environment, a concept called convergent evolution.

The glass frog tends to be lime green in color but the skin around its stomach is transparent, exposing its internal organs.

Sachatamia orejuela likes being on the rocks around waterfalls. It may not be a pleasant place to live, but the wet, slippery rocks offer protection from predators.

On the other hand, the body of the glass frog is also well camouflaged between the rocks and the waterfall.

Researchers also hope that the findings have been published in BehaThis color, can be a reminder if the earth is full of extraordinary biodiversity.

“The best thing about working on the pitch is that nature is always full of surprises. You never know what discoveries you might have,” said Brunner.

In the future, he intends to study how female frogs respond to male frog behavior.
