UNFF 17: in New York, Ève Bazaïba praised the DRC’s efforts for efficient governance of its forests

The Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the Environment and Sustainable Development, Ève Bazaïba, has been staying in New York in the United States since Monday May 09, 2022 at the 17th session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF 17 ).

In her speech at the solemn opening of this session on Monday, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development recalled not only the environmental potential of the Democratic Republic of Congo but also the ecosystem services of its forests for humanity.

Eve Bazaïba noted the efforts undertaken by the Congolese Government to ensure efficient forest governance. This is the case of the measures taken to clean up the forestry sector and which have been able to save more than 3 million hectares of forests.

“Today, I confirm to the world that the DRC is co-organizing with the Arab Republic of Egypt the preparatory work for COP27. It is a great event that honors the Congo Basin as a whole,” said Eve Bazaïba.

Following France’s intervention, Eve Bazaïba drew the attention of the international community to the link that must now be established between war and the preservation of the environment, or better still, forests.

The 17th session of the United Nations Forum on Forests will examine for 5 days the preparations for the mid-term review in 2024 of the effectiveness of the international arrangement on forests in achieving its objectives including the communication strategy awareness of the UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2017-2030.
