The German forest in climate change – problems and opportunities

“For a long time, the role of the forest in climate change was an orchid topic for experts,” says forest expert Matthias Wenzel. Since around 2018, dramatic images of increasing forest fires in the Mediterranean region, extensive dying spruce forests or beech forests with dry peaks in the Upper Rhine plain have been worrying the public. The forest is increasingly recognized as a victim of climate change. But to what extent is it, and where will it go? And isn’t it also a carbon sink and water reservoir – and thus a means of shaping things – in times of global warming?

At the same time, the treatment of the forest has been particularly criticized since 2018.
Forest expert Wenzel says: “Our forestry has become a point of contention between worldviews. On the one hand, there are increasingly extreme opinions that want to stop using wood immediately. On the other hand, there are sometimes extremely unrealistic ideas about the amount of carbon storage that can be achieved through the use of forests.” He considers the associated hope that one might not have to restrict oneself so much in one’s material lifestyle if one lives somewhere to be absurd there is only enough reforestation in the world.

Matthias Wenzel advises that in this contentious discussion, we first look at the facts: Which factors can actually be influenced by humans in order to use the forest to mitigate climate change (“mitigation”). These facts are similar to the facts about the Climate change itself – well known and hardly scientifically controversial.

At the end of the lecture, the forest expert gives an outlook on what a sensible approach to the forest in Breisgau that takes into account as many interests as possible could look like.

After graduating with a degree in forestry from the University of Freiburg in 1996, Matthias Wenzel passed the state forestry examination in 1998. He is a publicly appointed and sworn expert for forestry establishment, forest assessment and forest nature conservation by the Freiburg regional council.
