Understanding the Factors Causing Heart Attacks: A Guide

Jakarta

Heart attack is a very serious and life-threatening condition. A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart muscle suddenly becomes obstructed.

Not infrequently, heart attacks can lead to death. In fact, those who survive a heart attack have a high risk of experiencing complications such as arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, and even heart failure.

Heart attacks can occur suddenly and without realizing it. Therefore, it is important to know the various factors that cause heart attacks in order to take precautions to avoid the risk of this dangerous condition.

Factors Causing Heart Attacks

As previously explained, heart attacks are caused by obstruction of blood flow to the heart muscle. There are several factors that can trigger this, including:

1. Coronary Heart Disease

Coronary heart disease is one of the main causes of heart attacks. This condition occurs due to a blockage in the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart.

This blockage is usually caused by fat, such as cholesterol, which accumulates and forms plaque. Plaque can stick to the walls of blood vessels, and over time it can block blood flow to these vessels.

2. Hypoxemia

Hypoxemia is a condition caused by low oxygen levels in the blood. Hypoxemia can occur when the lungs are unable to produce sufficient oxygen, or when oxygen cannot enter the blood.

As a result, the heart can experience a lack of oxygen. In the long term, this can trigger damage to the heart muscle and cause a heart attack.

3. Coronary Artery Spasm (CAS)

Coronary artery spasm (CAS) is a condition that can also cause a heart attack. CAS is caused by narrowing of the arteries.

When the arteries narrow, this can disrupt blood flow to the heart. Narrowing of blood vessels due to CAS is generally temporary, but if not treated immediately it can trigger chest pain and even a heart attack.

4. Kawasaki Disease

Kawasaki disease or Kawasaki disease is inflammation that occurs in the blood vessels. This disease generally attacks children aged five years and under.

Because inflammation occurs in the blood vessels, Kawasaki disease can trigger complications that endanger heart health. If not treated immediately, Kawasaki disease can cause inflammation of the heart muscle, arrhythmia, and even heart attack.

5. Exercising Too Hard

Apart from certain diseases, the causes of heart attacks can also come from daily activities. For example, exercising too hard or intensely.

A study found that exercise that is too heavy and sudden can increase the risk of heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest in people who are at risk of heart disease. Apart from that, sports activities that exceed the body’s capacity can also cause heart rhythm disturbances.

6. DRUG ABUSE

Use of drugs, such as cocaine or marijuana, that is not in accordance with a doctor’s prescription can increase the risk of heart attack. The reason is that drug abuse can cause side effects on the blood vessels, thereby affecting blood flow to the heart.

7. Frequently taking pain relievers

Apart from drugs, consuming excessive pain relievers (painkillers) can also increase the risk of heart attack. Pain relievers, such as ibuprofen and aspirin, can have a number of side effects.

For example, increasing blood pressure or triggering blood clots in the arteries. Both of these are factors that can increase the risk of heart attack. Therefore, taking painkillers must be as recommended by a doctor, especially for people who are at risk of heart disease.
