Understanding the Factors Behind Essential Hypertension: Increased Systemic Vascular Resistance and Reduced Aortic Elasticity

[Voice of Hope September 17, 2023]Increased systemic vascular resistance and reduced aortic elasticity are the main factors of essential hypertension.

Hypertension A UK Biobank (UKB) study suggests that increased cardiac output, that is, increased heart work, is also an important cause of increased blood pressure and hypertension in middle-aged and elderly people.

The study measured the cardiac output, systemic vascular resistance and aortic elasticity of more than 30,000 residents aged 45 to 84 through cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Among them, the aortic elasticity of 21,778 people and the volume of visceral adipose tissue of nearly 20,000 people were measured. and abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue volume.

The cardiac output of hypertensive patients is higher, (17.9±26.6)% higher than that of normotensive patients, and the systemic vascular resistance is also higher, which is (11.4±27.9)% higher than that of normotensive patients.

These differences persisted after adjusting for body size and adiposity.

The contribution of cardiac output to systemic vascular resistance is more significant in younger individuals than in older individuals.

Aortic elasticity decreases with age, with people with higher blood pressure having lower aortic elasticity, but younger people have greater differences in aortic distensibility than older people.

The researchers pointed out that hypertension is more closely related to increased cardiac output and reduced aortic elasticity is an important cause of hypertension in all ages. Interventions targeting these factors may be effective in preventing and treating hypertension.
