Understanding the Difference Between Ulcers and GERD: Symptoms and Treatment Explained by Expert Dr. Sally A Nasution

Jakarta

Ulcers and GERD are digestive disorders that many people often complain about. However, some people may not understand the difference between these two diseases.

Both stomach ulcers and acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) have similar symptoms, making it difficult to differentiate them. Most people with stomach ulcers and GERD both complain of pain in the stomach when they recur.

“So there are several criteria, yes. For ulcers, it’s very common. If it’s GERD itself where stomach acid rises, it’s reflux,” said internal medicine specialist Dr. Dr. Sally A Nasution, SpPD, to detikcomWednesday (6/3/2024).

“And the increase in stomach acid is what causes irritation,” continued the chairman of the Association of Indonesian Internal Medicine Specialists (PAPDI).

As the name suggests, Dr. Sally explained, stomach acid should be in the stomach. However, when stomach acid production is excessive, the fluid will rise and cause acid irritation.

“Once stomach acid production is excessive, it increases, which is sometimes like a heart attack. It’s called acid irritation. It can make the chest feel hot,” explained Dr. Sally.

“And there are several symptoms that are somewhat different between GERD and ulcers but they must be proven, one of which is by endoscopy,” he continued.
