Understanding Oxycodone

Oxycodone is used to relieve pain that is severe enough to require opioid treatment and when other pain medications are not working well enough. Oxycodone belongs to a group of drugs called narcotic analgesics (pain relievers). Oxycodone works on the central nervous system (CNS) to relieve pain.

Oxycodone capsules or tablets should not be used if pain medication is needed for a short time, such as when recovering from surgery. Do not use this medication to relieve mild pain or in situations where non-narcotic medications are effective. This medication should not be used to treat pain that is felt only occasionally or ‘as needed’.
