Understanding Motorcyclist Sign Language: Greetings, Gestures, and Clues for Non-Experts

Motorcyclists have their own sign language. This sometimes causes confusion in traffic. Sometimes a motorist considers a gesture rude, while it is actually a greeting or a gesture of gratitude. For the non-experts: these mean the gestures that motorcyclists sometimes make.

Motorcyclists do many things slightly differently than other road users. For example, they often greet each other by raising their left hand. Sometimes they also add a V sign.

Harley greetings

This so-called ‘biker greeting’ was invented by Barry Sheene, a famous motorcycle racer from the 1970s. Sometimes the arm stays down. This greeting is also called the Harley or cruiser greeting. The arm is then pointed downwards at an angle of 45 degrees with one, two or more fingers extended, and with the palm in the direction of the oncoming vehicle.

Stair gesture

So much for greetings to fellow motorcyclists. Because people sometimes greet or gesture to motorists. To non-experts, that sometimes looks rude. When a motorcyclist rides through a traffic jam, he or she can make a ‘pedaling gesture’. Do not interpret this as a ‘kick in’, but as a thank you.

Clutch

Because motorcyclists cannot always take one hand off the handlebars. For example, when they are at a red light and have pressed the clutch, or when everything has to go fast and they don’t have time to take a hand off the wheel.

Even in a busy environment, such as in a traffic jam, they prefer to keep both hands on the wheel. By the way, the motorcyclist usually sticks out his right foot and not the left as a thank you, because he operates the throttle with his right hand.

If a motorcyclist moves his arm up and down sideways, that is not critical either, but a warning that there is danger. For example, an accident or an approaching traffic jam.
