An electric guitar on which legendary American musician Jimi Hendrix played in the early 1960s has fetched $ 180,000 excluding auction fees, nearly $ 153,000 at auction in the US. According to the Rolling Stone site, that was nearly four times as much as the auction house’s upfront estimate.

Hendrix played the instrument when he returned home from military service in 1962 and moved to Clarksville, Tennessee. When he emigrated to London four years later, he left the guitar in New York in the apartment of one of his best friends. The instrument was certified by Hendrix’s brother. For the connoisseurs: it is a brand-less Japanese-made electric guitar. It is not clear whether the instrument is still playable: the guitar was sold without strings. If it has been stored without strings for a long time, the neck of the guitar may be irreparably bent – and thus unplayable. The guitar also appears to have a tremolo bridge, but the lever is missing.

Besides Hendrix’s guitar, properties of other big stars also went under the hammer. Among other things, a pair of Prince’s custom boots ($ 13,000), an Elvis Presley ring ($ 22,500) and a Michael Jackson jacket ($ 20,000) changed hands.
