Unapproved Slimming Treatment Leads to Botulism Outbreak in EU: Insights from a Romanian Cosmetic Surgeon

There is a medical alert in the European Union after dozens of cases of botulism were discovered following an unauthorized slimming treatment. The explanations of a Romanian cosmetic surgeon.

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control has identified no fewer than 87 cases of botulism this year alone, a disease that can lead to death and is caused by botox injections in the stomach.

The trend started in Turkey and the treatment, which is neither authorized nor scientifically proven, involves the injection of botulinum toxin into the stomach muscles, thus paralyzing them, making digestion difficult on the one hand, but also creating the feeling of satiety after eating very little.

Proponents of the treatment say such an injection lasts three months and promote it as an alternative to surgery, licensed stomach-shrinking procedures.

Asked about these procedures, Dana Miricioiu, cosmetic surgeon, said:

“I have to tell you that this type of treatment is being researched. You know at the moment all kinds of institutes and it’s being talked about, including Johns Hopkins, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), they mention this procedure as being possible to be done, we now have to take several factors into account. It is not known exactly what kind of botulinum toxin or how much was used in those clinics.

Botox we know very well is a new neuro-protein that is produced by a bacterium. This bacterium if ingested in very large quantities causes death.

The injections, I must say from the beginning that the injections that are carried out in the aesthetic sphere at the moment are extremely, extremely, extremely safe, because this amount is infinitesimal. So there is no fear whatsoever.

I don’t know exactly what happened, but at the time these mishaps occurred, I think that amount was either exaggerated or the procedure was not done properly.

As a result, from my point of view, let me once again describe a pharmaceutical method of weight loss that theoretically cannot have beneficial effects either in the long term or in the short term. I think things are exaggerated even when we have many more methods to lose weight healthy and fast.

This method, which is described theoretically, I told you about these institutes is also very little, three to six months, I don’t see its meaning from my point of view as a cosmetic surgeon, and there I think it is a problem of technique and amount of toxin injected,” said Dana Miricioiu, cosmetic surgeon, on the News Hour with CNN.
