UNAIDS: Germany increases its contribution

The German government announced (June 25) its intention to donate an additional 20 million euros to UNAIDS in 2020 to strengthen the response to HIV during the Covid-19 pandemic. This sum is in addition to its annual contribution to the basic budget of five million euros. Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn shared the decision during a meeting with Winnie Byanyima, the executive director of UNAIDS. “We commend the work of UNAIDS in the fight against Covid-19 which emphasizes the involvement of communities, the access of key and vulnerable populations to essential health services, including those to fight against HIV , protecting fundamental rights and reducing the socio-economic impact of the epidemic, “said Jens Spahn. “With this additional envelope, we encourage UNAIDS to continue its essential work alongside the World Health Organization and other international health partners. As a reminder, Germany committed up to a billion dollars during the last replenishment of funding from the Global Fund to fight AIDS.
