UN: People in Russian-besieged Ukrainian cities face starvation

The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has called for unhindered access to people trapped in Russian cities besieged by Russian forces, where they are at risk of starvation.

“One thing if people are to suffer the devastation of war, another is if they are at risk of starvation,” David Beadley, the organization’s head of state, said during a three-day visit to Ukraine.

The organization says it has helped 1.4 million people in Ukraine and wants to help 2.3 million this month, but the most important thing is access to cities like Mariupol, which are believed to have more than 100,000 people under siege.

More than seven million people have been displaced within Ukraine as a result of the war, and former supply chains are no longer functioning in many places.

According to WFP, about 60% of displaced people and a third of Ukraine’s population worry that they will not be able to provide for themselves.

Mariupol Mayor Vadim Boichenko has announced that up to 20,000 civilians have been killed in the city since the start of the war. About 120,000 civilians are still trapped in the city
