UMCG withdraws earlier warning about vitamin B12

Researchers at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) warned earlier about the health risks of too much vitamin B12. The UMCG is now returning to this.

The researchers now say that people with a vitamin B12 deficiency should take dietary supplements.

Unrest

Earlier this week, researchers from the UMCG reported that an excess of vitamin B12 can be harmful. People with a high value of this vitamin in the blood would have a greater chance of dying. The researchers will now come back to this and the UMCG will adjust its advice accordingly. “The warning caused uncertainty, and led to questions and anxiety among patients and practitioners. That has never been our intention ”, the UMCG says.

Cause

The UMCG research shows that people with a lot of vitamin B12 in their bodies more often die prematurely. The researchers concluded that an overdose of vitamin B12 can therefore lead to a greater risk of death, but is this correct? Indeed, no research has yet been done into whether the presence of above average B12 is also the cause of the higher mortality.

“More research is needed to find out if, and if so how, high vitamin B12 levels have a causal relationship with premature death.”
