Ukrainians have changed their mind about cooperation with the IMF | News | News

Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted a second survey among residents of Ukraine on the country’s cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It turned out that the opinion of citizens on this subject has changed for the worse.

So, according to a survey in June, 61% of respondents said that “now it is better not to cooperate with the IMF and not to receive new loans.” About 24% believe that cooperation with the organization is beneficial for Ukraine, while 16% found it difficult to give an answer, writes TASS.

At the same time, in April, 46% of respondents opposed cooperation with the IMF, that is, 15% less than now. Obtaining financial assistance was approved by 32% (8% more than in June), 22% could not give a definite answer, writes Strana.UA.

12 June Kiev received the first tranche from the IMF in the amount of $ 2.1 billion, while the funds did not come directly from the organization, but from several countries – members of the fund in different currencies. Four more tranches are expected.

The payment of funds became possible after Kiev fulfilled 12 Brussels requirements related to the fight against corruption, changes in the banking sector, energy, healthcare and social policy.

Also in June, Kiev received from the European Commission € 500 million loan. Financial Assistance Unlocked after approval IMF new loan program for 18 months. In addition, the European Commission intends to allocate Ukraine up to € 12.5 million on the development of civil society.

Since 2014, the European Union has granted Kiev loans of € 3.8 billion, which is the largest amount ever granted by the EU to a partner country.

However, not all Ukrainian politicians approve of such cooperation. Thus, the party “Opposition platform – For life” accused the country’s president Vladimir Zelensky of crouching before the IMF to the detriment interests of the people. Verkhovna Rada deputy Vadim Rabinovich believes that the fund fooled Kiev, changing the rules issuing a new loan.
