Ukrainian President Monitors Security Situation in Belarus Amid Wagner Fighter Training of Belarusian Troops

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed concern over Russia’s efforts to halt Ukraine’s counteroffensive in the south and east of the country. In his daily address to the nation, Zelenskyy emphasized that Russian forces were investing all available resources to stop Ukrainian troops. He also acknowledged that the operation to push back Russian forces was progressing slower than expected, although reports of battlefield advances by Ukraine have emerged.

Zelenskyy also revealed that he was closely monitoring the security situation in neighboring Belarus. While he stated that there were currently no large-scale threats, he received an important report on the matter. This comes as news broke that Russia’s Wagner mercenary group had reached an agreement to train Belarusian troops. The Belarusian defense ministry confirmed the agreement, stating that it aimed to develop a roadmap for training and experience transfer between different branches of the armed forces. A video released by the ministry showed Wagner fighters instructing Belarusian soldiers at a training ground near Minsk.

The involvement of Wagner fighters in Belarusian military training raises concerns, as the mercenary group had previously called off its rebellion against the Russian military leadership and was promised sanctuary in Belarus. Belarus has emerged as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest ally in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

Despite the challenges faced by Ukrainian forces, there is no pressure from Western allies to advance faster. Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian president’s office, stated that the focus was on providing further assistance rather than exerting pressure. General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, commander of Ukrainian forces in the south, reported that his troops were systematically moving the enemy out of their positions. He also noted that enemy losses over the past 24 hours were significant.

However, Russia’s defense ministry claimed that its forces had repelled 16 Ukrainian attacks on the eastern front. Military analyst Serhiy Hrabskyi highlighted the difficulties faced by Ukrainian forces in advancing towards the port of Berdyansk on the Sea of Azov. The enemy is offering strong resistance to prevent Ukraine’s southward advance.

Ukraine’s counteroffensive, which began weeks ago, aims to capture villages in the southeast of the country and cut off the land bridge established by Russian forces with the annexed Crimean peninsula. The ongoing conflict has been marked by intense battles, primarily led by Wagner fighters, resulting in significant casualties on both sides.
