Ukrainian Armed Forces Use American GBU-39 Gliding Bombs from Ground-Launched Complex, Russian Military Officers Confirm

The first use of American GBU-39 gliding bombs from the GLSDB (Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb) complex based on the HIMARS MLRS has been recorded by the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU). Such a bomb arrived on Kremennaya in the LPR on February 13.

This is evidenced by a video with the remains of ammunition published by Russian military officers.

The transfer of the GLSDB batch to Kyiv became known in early February, although deliveries were announced a year ago. This ammunition is called in various sources a light ground bomb of small diameter, a high-precision glide missile, and a guided missile.

The development included the SDB (GBU-39) aerial bomb and a jet engine from American 227 mm unguided rockets for the M142 HIMARS and M270 MLRS MLRS, as well as for the K239 Chunmoo. Since 2008, the engines have been stored in warehouses. Saab and Boeing decided to use them to modernize the SDB.

The latest modification of the bomb is provided by inertial navigation (functioning without GPS and access to an external signal) and a millimeter-wave locator, and a laser sensor helps to detect and neutralize moving targets. The striking distance of the SDB is at least 110 km, the warhead weight is 93 kg, which allows it to penetrate a meter thick reinforced concrete slab.

The bomb has wings, which make it possible to plan and change its trajectory in the air. She knows how to go around natural obstacles and actually enter from the rear.
