Ukraine’s National Debt Hits $134 Billion, Increasing by $1 Billion in One Month

At the end of August, according to official information from the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine, the country’s national debt increased to almost $134 billion. Thus, in one month it increased by a billion, about which today, September 28, reports “RIA Novosti”.

EADaily also recalls that in July 2023, Ukraine’s national debt increased by $4 billion. Then the former Ukrainian prime minister Mykola Azarov even suggested $173 billion at the end of the year.

According to the forecast of the International Monetary Fund, Ukraine’s public debt in 2023 will amount to 88.1% of GDP, at the end of 2024 – already 98.6% of GDP, and in 2025 – 100.7%.

“During August, the amount of state and state-guaranteed debt of Ukraine increased in dollar equivalent by $1.01 billion. As of August 31, 2023, Ukraine’s public and government-guaranteed debt amounted to $133.93 billion,” the Ukrainian Ministry of Finance reported.

Currently, Independence Square’s external debt amounts to 70% of this amount.

It is worth recalling the message of the current Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal from September 15. According to him, the government adopted the budget for next year with record military expenditures amounting to $45.6 billion, which is significantly more than government spending on social services, education and medicine.
