Ukraine opposes the visit of the IAEA Director General to the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant

Grosi told Twitter that the visit was organized at the request of Ukraine.

However, the Ukrainian nuclear energy agency Enerhoatom on Tuesday accused Grosi of lying and said he had not given the green light to such a visit.

“Ukraine did not invite Gross to visit the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and previously denied him such a visit. A visit to the nuclear power plant will be possible only when Ukraine regains control of it, “Grosi told Telegram.

“IAEA Director General Rafael Grosi is lying again,” Enerhoatom said.

“We see this announcement as a new attempt to gain access to the Zaporozhye power plant to legitimize the occupiers,” Enerhoatom said.

The Ukrainian nuclear power agency said communication between the Zaporozhye NPP and the IAEA had been cut short after Russian troops seized control. Enerhoatom has announced that data on NPP operations will be transferred to the IAEA once it regains control of Ukraine.

On May 19, Russia threatened to shut down Ukraine from the Zaporizhia NPP if Kiev did not pay Moscow for electricity.

In 2021, the Zaporozhye NPP accounted for 20% of Ukraine’s annual electricity production and almost half of all nuclear energy production in Ukraine.
