Ukraine. Nova Kakhovka dam destroyed

Geopolitical News

The Nova Kakhovka dam, located in the part of the Cherson region under Russian control, was the target of an act of sabotage (there was also talk of bombing) which caused the leakage of enormous quantities of water from the reservoir. The Russian military has been forced to abandon the flooded trenches and retreat, while the urban centers of Oleshky and Nova Kakhovka, both under Russian control, are now flooded by the widening of the Dnipro; 300 homes downstream, in the localities of Korsunki and Dnepryan, were evacuated.
Local pro-Russian authorities reported that the engine room of the Nova Kakhovka hydroelectric plant was blown up from the inside, causing irreparable damage.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov spoke of “sabotage”, emphasizing the impact on thousands of residents in the region, and announced that Russia had requested an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, which, it was later known, was will hold in the evening.
As a matter of practice, responsibility has been turned over to Russia on the Ukrainian side. As in the case of the attacks on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the Russians are unlikely to hit themselves, so the Ukrainian case seems weak.
The rupture of the Nova Kakhovka dam puts the Zaporizhzhia plant’s own cooling system at risk.
