Ukraine may be subject to additional conditions for joining the European Union. The agency reports this Reuters citing three sources.
Currently, the European Commission is assessing Kyiv’s efforts and the country’s progress towards membership in the European Union. The EC will make its decision on November 8. At the same time, Ukraine will most likely be put forward new conditions for membership, the media writes. Among them are measures to combat bribery, as well as resolving the issue of minority rights in Ukraine, which the Hungarian authorities previously insisted on.
Back in October, Budapest stated that Hungary would not agree to Ukraine’s membership in the EU until the Ukrainian authorities abolished “discriminatory” laws against Transcarpathian Hungarians, namely projects limiting the use of the language of national minorities on the territory of Ukraine, Kommersant recalls.
The day before, the Council of Europe’s advisory body on constitutional law (Venice Commission) also decided that recent amendments to Ukrainian legislation on national minorities require additional measures.
