The Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) demanded that FIFA and UEFA exclude the Russian Football Union (RFU) due to the participation of the Crimean Sevastopol and Rubin in the Russian Second League, according to the UAF website.

In early June, Sevastopol and Rubin Yalta were certified to play in the B division of the Second League (the third division of the Russian championship). On July 16, the teams made their debut in the Russian Championship.

Crimean clubs made their debut in the Russian Football Championship

RBC Sport turned to the RFU and UEFA for comment.

Earlier, on June 25, the UAF sent a letter to FIFA and UEFA, in which it asked to exclude the RFU for allowing Crimean clubs to play in the Second League.

By decision of UEFA, the Crimean teams, after the peninsula became part of Russia, compete in the regional championship. At the end of June at UEFA reminded on the prohibition of Crimean clubs to participate in competitions organized by the RFU.

“As for the situation in Crimea, in accordance with the decision of the UEFA Commission on Emergency Situations dated August 22, 2014, the UEFA Executive Committee decided to ban Crimean clubs from participating in competitions organized by the Russian Football Union. As of January 1, 2015, the region is treated as a “special zone” for football purposes until further notice.

Last summer, the FNL (responsible for holding tournaments in the First and Second Leagues) created a working group to analyze the readiness of Crimean clubs to integrate into Russian tournaments. UEFA stated that they did not give Crimean clubs permission to play in RFU tournaments. In April, the FNL announced that it was ready to accept four Crimean clubs.

In October 2022, RFU President Alexander Dyukov stated that he saw no reason to withdraw his FIFA membership due to the inclusion of Crimean clubs in the FNL, but noted that “everything is possible.”

After the start of the military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, Russian teams and clubs were suspended from competitions under the auspices of FIFA and UEFA.
