Ukraine Creates 200-Mile Security Zone in Black Sea with Naval Strike Drones in 2023

Ukraine has formed a 200-mile security zone in the Black Sea: the Main Intelligence Directorate explained how this became possible

Using naval strike drones in 2023, Ukrainian warriors were able to push the Russian fleet off Ukrainian shores and force enemy ships to flee Sevastopol Bay in temporarily occupied Crimea. Thanks to precision attacks on Russian targets in the Black Sea and on the occupied peninsula, the defenders managed to create a 200-mile security zone at sea, providing a corridor for merchant ships.

The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, which has its own fleet of attack naval drones, noted that they work daily both to improve weapons and to find new effective strike tactics. This is stated in the publication The New York Times.

In its material, the publication noted that in 2023, Ukraine was able to create a security zone in the Black Sea, through which merchant ships now pass. This was achieved, in particular, thanks to the increased use of maritime attack drones.

The commander of the fleet of attack surface drones of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine with the pseudo “Thirteenth” shared with Western journalists some details of achieving the goal of destroying the dominance of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea.

In particular, he said that it was the operators of naval drones of the Ukrainian military intelligence who were behind the destruction of Russian landing boats of the “shark” and “chamois” classes, effective strikes on the patrol ship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet “Sergey Kotov” and the reconnaissance vessel “Ivan Khurs”.

“When we hit the target, the whole team, of course, was overwhelmed with emotions. We shouted and congratulated each other,” he recalled the emotions of the scouts after the successful attack on “Sergei Kotov” “Thirteenth”.

Naval attack drones allowed Ukraine to achieve what seemed impossible: thanks to the latest weapons, a state that actually does not have a navy won a victory in a confrontation at sea with a state positioning itself as a “maritime one.”

“No one has as much experience in using marine drones as we do. There are no teachers, no textbooks. We are now writing these books,” stated the commander of the GUR naval drone fleet.

Of course, says “Thirteenth,” the Russians are also learning from attack to attack and are looking for more and more new ways to prevent Ukrainian naval drones from reaching their targets. Therefore, each new operation requires a special approach from Ukrainian operators, who each time improve both the drones themselves and the tactics of their use.

“With each new operation, both we and they learn [россияне]“, emphasized “Thirteenth”.

And the Ukrainian soldiers turned out to be capable students: the existence of a 200-mile security strip and the formation of a safe shipping corridor in 2023 became a fait accompli.

“They (Russian warships. – Ed.) can be thrown back. Russia’s dominance in the Black Sea is over,” summed up the MOU GUR soldier.

Let us recall that earlier British intelligence stated that Russia wants to catch up with Ukraine in the development of maritime kamikaze drones. In 2024, the occupiers want to establish mass production of such equipment.

In particular, the British paid attention to the activities of the Kingiseps Machine-Building Plant in St. Petersburg. On November 27, 2023, the head of this enterprise announced that their naval drones would be tested in a “special military operation” against Ukraine with the goal of establishing mass production in 2024.

The plant also stated that the advanced Russian drones will be able to carry ammunition weighing up to 600 kg.
