Ukie Releases Recommendations to Protect Underage Users from Loot Boxes in Games

British organization Ukie published a set of recommendations designed to protect underage users from luboxes and similar mechanics in games.

A selection of restrictions was created at the suggestion of the UK Ministry of Culture, Media and Sports – this was helped by a group of specialists created for this purpose (Technical Working Group).

The central rule is related to limiting the ability to purchase loot boxes by players who have not reached the age of majority. It is proposed to regulate such issues with the help of “parental control” options, which are advised to pay more attention on different platforms.

In particular, the authors of the recommendations suggest launching an information campaign where parents would be told about the principles of operation of such options and the dangers of loot boxes.

In addition, game companies must demonstrate the percentage of the probability of “falling out” of specific items and bonuses in loot boxes before purchasing them. Some games already use this practice, for example, in FIFA Ultimate Team.

The progress of all these instructions will be considered in a year – the direct process of regulating loot boxes, however, will be handled by the gaming companies themselves, so the success of the event is still in question.

Last March, by the way, an Austrian court equated FIFA loot boxes with gambling.
