UK Trials to Give Third Dose of Covid-19 Vaccine

Suara.com – Until recently generally the Covid-19 vaccine given in two doses. But, now the UK is conducting research by giving a third dose to a number of people.

This national research aims to find out whether giving “booster” injections the third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine be safe and effective in developing immune protection against COVID-19.

Quoted from ANTARA, as many as 3,000 participants are planned to be involved in this study. Later researchers will test seven different Covid-19 vaccines. Several vaccines have the approval of regulators and are widely used. Others are still under development.

British officials are planning the possibility of launching a pre-winter booster vaccination movement after initially targeting immunization with a two-dose schedule for the entire adult population by the summer.

Major vaccine manufacturers, as well as a number of policymakers in the United States, have also suggested that booster or even yearly COVID-19 shots may be needed. However, some world health experts question the existence of evidence to suggest that repeated vaccinations are needed.

UK Southampton University pediatric immunology and infectious disease professor Saul Faust, who will also lead the research, said their findings would inform vaccination strategy planners and politicians “in their decisions about whether to reinforce anyone with a third shot, or – – if they’re going to have a booster shot– which vaccine to use. “

The Covid-19 vaccines currently being evaluated include the production of Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Moderna which have already been launched in the UK, as well as vaccines made by Johnson & Johnson, Novavax, Valneva and CureVac which have signed contracts with the UK.

The vaccines will be given as a third injection for recipients of two doses of the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccine. The research’s preliminary findings are expected in September.

“Data from this world’s first clinical trial will help shape our strengthening program later this year,” said Health Secretary Matt Hancock.
