UK Plans to Expand List of Safe Countries: India Included, No Chance for Illegal Indians to Remain as Refugees

The UK is reportedly planning to expand its list of safe countries. It is reported that India will also be included in the new list. This will speed up the process of returning Indians who came to Britain illegally and there will be no chance for Indians to remain as refugees in Britain.

Indian nationals who arrive in Britain illegally by small boats or by other means cannot remain in Britain as refugees. India and Georgia are the latest countries to be included in the list, according to a draft law prepared in the House of Commons in the British Parliament. The move is part of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s plan to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the UK.

What is a safe country?

UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman has said that if India is included in the list, illegal immigrants from India who have no right to stay in the UK will be quickly sent back and told that they cannot stay if they came here illegally. In other words, Indians arriving illegally in the UK will no longer be able to seek asylum in the country. Therefore, Indian nationals arriving illegally will be sent back without being allowed to file appeals.

The move comes as part of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s promise to stop migrant boats landing illegally on the country’s shores through the perilous journey through the English Channel. This will strengthen the UK’s immigration system. Protection claims can also help prevent abuse.

The UK government has stated that there was a large influx of small boats into the UK from these countries last year, despite people in India and Georgia apparently not having problems in their own country.

The new law makes it clear that people who travel to the UK illegally cannot continue to live in the UK and cannot build a life in the country.

Under UK law, a country can only be declared a safe country if the UK Home Secretary is satisfied that there is no serious risk that its nationals will be tortured and that returning nationals to that country would not contravene the UK’s human rights conventions. The UK Home Office has rigorously assessed India and Georgia to ensure that both criteria are met, the UK government said in a statement.

More Indians are coming to the UK illegally

The UK has recently seen an increase in the number of Indians crossing the English Channel illegally into the country in dangerous small boats. Government figures show that in 2019 and 2018, not a single person immigrated to the UK illegally from India, while in 2020, 64 and 67 in 2021 arrived in Britain on small boats. Men between the ages of 25 and 40 are crossing illegally from India to the UK in small boats. Apart from India, people are arriving illegally in the UK from Albania, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Sunak’s main goal

Immigration is one of the top priorities of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. To ensure that people effectively support the country’s economy by paying taxes and complying with other laws, the UK government is banning illegal immigrants.

Earlier this year, the UK government passed the Illegal Immigration Bill. This is Sunak’s flagship project to prevent illegal entry into the UK on small boats.
