UK Beware of AY.4.2 Latest Mutation of ‘Delta Plus’ Variant COVID-19

Jakarta

The UK is monitoring the latest mutation of the COVID-19 ‘Delta Plus’ variant named AY.4.2. The variant, which is feared to be more contagious, is found in 6 percent of cases in the country.

Experts are conducting tests to determine whether the mutations contained in this new variant have properties favorable to survival.

Quoted from the BBC, so far AY.4.2 not yet categorized as Variant of Concern (VoC) or variant under investigation.

What is the AY.4.2 variant?

The original Delta variant was first identified in India in October 2020, with the official name B.1617.2. This variant continues to mutate giving rise to various variants labeled ‘Delta Plus’.

More than 45 ‘Delta Plus’ strains have been identified, the most common being AY.4 which accounts for 70 percent of the worldwide SARS-CoV-2 genome sequence. Its two derivatives are AY.4.1 and AY.4.2.

So far, there is no indication that these mutations make ‘Delta Plus’ any more infectious. However, experts continue to research it.
