London ∙ From today, people applying for carer jobs in the UK will no longer be able to get dependent visas. Health care assistants or carers will no longer be allowed to bring and stay with their spouse, children or other dependents into the UK from today, with advance notice. The ban on dependent visas for carers is the announcement of the change in law that has worried the Malayali carers and nurses who have migrated to the UK recently.

Those who have applied before March 11 and are approved by the Home Office will still be allowed to bring their dependents. But any application after that will not be considered for dependent visa. In the last couple of years, there has been an influx of Malayali carers to the UK. This includes those who illegally paid large sums of money to agents. Nurses mostly fell into this category. Dependent visa was the main reason for many of them to come to UK even leaving their jobs in Gulf countries. Those arriving on dependent visas can also work, increasing their earning potential.

It is also unlikely that the opposition, including Labor, will oppose the law aimed at reducing immigration in the near general election in Parliament. The hope that relaxations may be granted in this law is now misplaced. In addition, the minimum salary for a skilled worker visa will be increased from £26,200 to £38,700 on 4 April. But the change will not apply to health and care worker visas, which include nursing and social care, and education sector workers on national pay scales. The minimum income required to bring a spouse on a dependent visa will rise from £18,600 a year initially to £29,000 and eventually to around £38,700.
