Researchers in various parts of the world are still trying to find a cure for the Corona virus or COVID-19. These include natural or herbal ingredients that can be used for Corona treatment, one of which is virgin coconut oil (VCO).
Pulmonology expert from the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKKMK UGM) as well as the Head of the Airbone Disease Team at Dr Sardjito Hospital, dr Ika Trisawati, M.Sc., Sp.PD., KP., FINASIM conveyed the pilot study of VCO as adjuvant therapy COVID-19 is currently taking place in 4 Yogyakarta hospitals, namely Dr Sardjito Hospital, UGM Hospital, Wonosari Hospital, and Sleman Hospital.

“VCO is a medium chain fatty acids (MCA) which contains lauric acid which is converted into monolaurin monoglyceride which has an antiviral effect by destroying the viral lipid membrane,” Ika said in a written statement sent by the Public Relations of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) to journalists, Thursday (15 / 4/2021).
Ika explained that like soap, VCO works to damage cell membranes in viruses. When VCO enters the body it will be converted into monolaurin which when interacting with the virus cell membrane will damage the lipid layer in these cells. That way, the virus cell membrane becomes damaged and does not function.

“VCO can reduce inflammatory markers in sufferers of COVID-19 so it is hoped that it can prevent aggravation of the disease,” he explained.
Deputy for Supervision of Traditional Medicines, Health Supplements and Cosmetics, Dra Reri Indriani, Apt., M.Si, added that Indonesia has abundant natural material potential with more than 30,000 plant species. He revealed that the data from the Research on Medicines and Herbs recorded that of the existing plant species, 2,848 of them were medicinal plants spread across 405 ethnicities in 34 provinces throughout Indonesia.
“The potential of Indonesia’s natural ingredients provides a great opportunity to be used as herbal products, as well as standardized herbal medicines and phyto-pharmacy, including as an adjuvant therapy for COVID-19,” he said.
He conveyed that BPOM has provided assistance to several related herbal studies COVID-19. To date, there are 15 studies using natural ingredients, 2 of which have completed clinical trials.
