UGM Expert Said Concerned Therapy, Alternative Corona Treatment

Yogyakarta

Therapy blood plasma or convalescent therapy is currently said to be one of the alternative therapies in treating positive patients Corona virus or COVID-19 in a number of countries. Specialist Internal Medicine Specialist (Intern Pulmonologist) Gadjah Mada University (FKKMK UGM) Dr. Sumardi, Sp PD, KP, FINASIM, said that this therapy has long been used as a method of treating diseases caused by infections.

Sumardi said this therapy was used for example during the Spanish Flu pandemic in the 1900s. In addition, the treatment of diphtheria, bird flu, swine flu, ebola, SARS, and MERS.

In the treatment of Corona virus patients, said Sumardi, therapy is carried out using blood plasma Corona positive patients who have recovered. Blood plasma containing these antibodies was transfused into Corona patients who are still sick.

“So blood plasma containing antibodies from cured patients is given to people who are still sick,” he explained in a written statement sent by UGM Public Relations, Wednesday (07/01/2020).

However, continued Sumardi, therapy plasma konvaselen this is still limited to clinical trials. Likewise, the Corona virus used in several countries is still limited to clinical trials, including in Indonesia. The success of this therapy is also still limited to the small number of patients.

Sumardi gave an example at the hospital in Shenzhen, China. In convaselen plasma therapy performed in 5 Corona patients with a ventilator, it was reported to accelerate the healing of 1 patient. While three other people showed a relatively slow healing process and 1 person died.

Sumardi explained that there were a number of special conditions that had to be fulfilled in order to carry out a convection transfusion, in addition to the general requirements for blood transfusion. One of the special conditions is that donors are Corona positive patients who have been declared cured. Next, donors must be shown to have sufficient levels of antibodies against Corona.

“Plasma taken about 400 millimeters using the plasmapheresis method, which only takes plasma from red blood cells only. Giving this blood plasma as much as 2 times a day in patients with COVID-19,” he explained.

Taking plasma, said Sumardi is better done on donors who are Corona patients who are healthy and are male because they do not have HLA antigens. Because HLA antigens can cause reactions or problems for donor recipients.

Sumardi continued convaselen plasma therapy not given to all Corona positive patients. This therapy is only given to patients with severe symptoms or critical conditions.

“Given to patients with severe symptoms to help speed healing, not for prevention. But this convaselen plasma therapy is an alternative treatment until a vaccine is found,” he concluded.
