Uchimur’s test was false positive, the gymnast is allowed to race in Tokyo

The three-time Olympic gymnastics champion Kohei Uchimura can start at Sunday’s international meeting in Tokyo, which will be a test competition before the postponed Olympic Games. The 31-year-old Japanese had a positive test for coronavirus last week and a question mark hung over his participation, but later it turned out that the result was wrong.

The race will take place with the participation of gymnasts from China, Russia, USA and domestic Japan. It will be the first major international test in Tokyo after the postponement of the Olympic Games in March until next year. 2,000 spectators will be allowed to sit in the auditorium of the Jojogi hall, everything will take place under strict health measures.

A false positive time test stopped the training of Japanese gymnasts, but Uchimura himself is trying to look at the whole affair from a better perspective. “It was a good experience anyway, given the non-standard conditions we are preparing for the Olympics. We must be able to show the best in all circumstances and not be injured or infected,” he told reporters.

Uchimura won the all-around at the previous Olympic Games in London and Rio de Janeiro, and in 2016 he also won gold in the team competition. He won four more silver medals at the Olympics and is a ten-time world champion.
