UAE’s Commitment to Climate Action: Highlights from Climate Future Week and COP28 Preparations

On the closing day of the “Climate Future Week” activities at the Museum of the Future, Her Excellency Maryam Al Muhairi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, stressed the importance of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), as it will witness the first global outcome to evaluate the progress made in implementing the goals of the agreement. Through a video recorded as part of the Climate Future Week events, Her Excellency Al Maryam Al Muhairi stressed the UAE’s commitment to climate action, noting that the COP28 conference must be a turning point that advances the climate action process over the next decade.

Al Muhairi considered that the UAE has always placed reducing emissions at the top of its priorities, in addition to preserving its natural resources, as she highlighted the country’s commitment to sustainability. She also noted that the UAE was the first in the region to announce climate neutrality goals by the year 2050.

Her Excellency Al Muhairi indicated that the UAE aims to reduce emissions by 40% by 2030, stressing the importance of cooperation between governments, industries and societal stakeholders, which embodies the country’s approach to climate action.

Her Excellency Al Muhairi concluded her speech by emphasizing the role and importance of (COP28), the UAE’s keenness to make its next session the most comprehensive of the Conference of the Parties, highlighting the conference’s action plan consisting of four pillars, which includes accelerating the achievement of an orderly, just and responsible transition in the energy sector, and developing climate financing mechanisms. The focus is on preserving people, lives and improving livelihoods, ensuring that the conference is comprehensive and solutions-driven.

This event coincides with the Year of Sustainability and the UAE’s preparations to host the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai late next November.

His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, President-designate of the Conference of the Parties (COP28), and Her Excellency Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, the United Nations Climate Leader for the Conference of the Parties (COP28) and President of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, also spoke in a special dialogue session to highlight the latest Preparations to host the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change late next November in the city of Dubai.
