U.S. State of Mississippi Removes Confederation Emblem …

The Republican Governor of Mississippi, the last U.S. state to have the Confederation emblem in its flag, said on Saturday that he would immediately sign a bill to remove the symbol.

Both the Senate and the House of Representatives of the state later by a two-thirds majority decided to table the bill to change the flag. The proposal is expected to be put to the vote in Congress on Sunday afternoon.

Mississippi is the last state in the country whose flag has the Confederation emblem. The state flag has red, white and blue stripes with the Confederacy battle emblem in the corner. It was first recorded in 1894.

The Confederacy was made up of southern states that fought north during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865. The Confederacy opposed the abolition of slavery.
