Financial News Agency, January 16 (Editor Shi Zhengcheng) Late on Monday night, Beijing time, disturbing news came out of the international shipping circle – another cargo ship was attacked by a missile near Yemen.

According to reports from the UK Maritime Trade Action Office (UKMTO), at 13:05 UTC on Monday (21:05 Beijing time), a “missile strike” occurred 95 nautical miles southeast of Aden, Yemen (red circle in the picture below) “ship” incident.

Maritime security company Ambrey later told the media that the cargo ship that was attacked this time was the Gibraltar Eagle, a cargo ship of an American bulk shipping company, flying the flag of the Marshall Islands. According to navigation records, the Gibraltar Eagle departed from Pohang Port in South Korea on December 24 last year and is expected to arrive at the Port of Suez, Egypt on January 20. Ambrey said the missile set the ship on fire, but there were no casualties and the ship itself was able to continue sailing.

The ship belongs to Eagle Bulk, a company listed on the U.S. stock market. Since the U.S. stock market is closed on Monday, there is no reaction from the capital market for the time being. Eagle Bulk later issued a statement confirming that its ship had been attacked, disclosing that “iron products” were being transported on board. The company confirmed that all seafarers were not injured, the damage to the cargo hold was limited, and the ship was moving away from the incident area.

Although the Houthi armed forces have not made a clear position, the U.S. Central Command has confirmed this fact in a post on social media and emphasized that the Gibraltar Eagle reported no casualties or serious damage to the ship. The US military also revealed that the Houthi armed forces launched an anti-ship missile earlier on Monday, but the missile failed to reach the sea and exploded directly on land.

The U.S. military and the Houthis continue to threaten each other

Last week’s air strikes on Yemen by British and American forces marked a more dangerous stage of the Red Sea crisis, as was illustrated by the attack on a U.S. cargo ship. The U.S. military previously disclosed that the Houthi armed forces also tried to attack the Burke-class destroyer USS Raboon with an anti-ship missile last Sunday. The missile was shot down by a U.S. fighter jet near the coast.

After the British and American air strikes, the Houthis announced that in addition to the original targets on ships bound for Israel, all British and American interests had also become the organization’s “legitimate targets.”

According to a report by Turkey’s semi-official Anadolu news agency on Monday, Ali al-Qahoum, a member of the political bureau of Yemen’s Houthi armed forces, said that the United States’ attacks on targets in Yemen were “ineffective” and promised an “open battle” with the United States.

Obviously, US President Biden has also made it clear that he will not hesitate to take further measures when necessary. In last week’s operation, the British and American troops bombed more than 60 targets in 28 locations. In addition to fighter jets invading Yemen and dropping bombs, U.S. warships and submarines in the Red Sea also participated in the operation. British Prime Minister Sunak also said on Monday that the British army had destroyed 13 Houthi armed targets.

According to the latest news on Monday, explosions were also heard near the airport in the coastal city of Hodeidah on Yemen’s west coast after the attack on the US ship. It is currently unclear what caused the explosion (or who caused the explosion).
