U.S. authorities suspect defective airbags in 30 million cars

The problem should concern American cars manufactured from 2001 to 2019. These include models from Honda, Ford, Toyota, General Motors, Nissan, Subaru, Tesla, Ferrari, Nissan, Mazda, Daimler, BMW Chrysler (now part of Stellantis) , Porsche or Jaguar Land Rover (owned by Tata Motors).

Investigators will focus both on the vehicles for which the airbags in question were installed during production and on some airbags used in repairs when the cars were called, the document states.

Due to worldwide problems with defective airbags, Takata finally went bankrupt in 2017. In 2016, for example, Toyota called almost 6 million cars for service due to Takata airbags.

In the United States alone, more than 67 million cars have been called in over the past decade. It was over 100 million worldwide. It was the largest such event in history.

In some cases, problematic devices can fire deadly metal fragments. At least 28 deaths, including 19 in the United States and more than 400 injuries, have been reported with defective Takata airbags.
