Day three in the U committee on the Ibiza affair. For the first time, it’s all about the casino case. The witnesses come from the Novomatic community – and from the public prosecutor: Harald Neumann, Matthias Purkhart and Alexander Merwald. “Die Presse” reports live.
In May 2019, the so-called “Ibiza video” turned Austria’s political landscape upside down. It led to the bursting of the turquoise-blue coalition and catapulted the then FPÖ leader and vice chancellor, Heinz-Christian Strache, to the sidelines. The political reappraisal now follows a year later in the parliamentary committee of inquiry in Ibiza. “Die Presse” provides an overview of the surveys and summaries of the statements as well as a live ticker.
Who is coming on Tuesday June 9th?
- 10 a.m .: Harald Neumann, formerly CEO of Novomatic. He played an important role in the appointment of FPÖ politician Peter Sidlos as CFO of Casinos Austria (Casag). Neumann resigned in February 2020.
- 1.30 p.m .: Matthias Purkhart, Senior Attorney at the Economic and Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (WKStA). The WKStA investigates the allegations of corruption that come from the Ibiza video.
- 4.30 p.m .: Alexander Merwald, Managing director of Novomatic sister Novo Equitiy. Merwald had also applied for the Casag post, on which Sidlo was ultimately placed. In March 2020, the manager was raided, from which documents come, which mention, among other things, an “amendment to the Gambling Act” and an “appointment before Christmas” with “Fuchs”. This could mean the then FPÖ State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Hubert Fuchs. More on this.

- The Causa gambling is about why the Novomatic is so much for FPÖ man Sidlo as casino CFO. And whether they are from the FPÖ Commitments for gaming licenses had gotten. The then FPÖ leader, Heinz-Christian Strache, said on the Ibiza video: “The Novomatic pays everyone.” (The presumption of innocence applies to everyone involved; Novomatic has now withdrawn from its holdings in Casag, Sidlo is no longer CFO.)
