Types of lunar eclipses and their explanations that need to be known

Bola.com, Jakarta – Moon eclipse is a celestial phenomenon in which the positions of the moon, earth, and sun are in a straight line. It can also be said, a lunar eclipse occurs when the moon is in its full phase and passes through the shadow of the earth.

When in this state the moon looks as if it disappeared because it was dark and did not reflect light to the earth. The event was caused by the sun not being able to emit light to the moon due to being blocked by the earth.

Moon eclipse can last quite a long time because the shadow of the earth is quite large. Lunar eclipses are not harmful to eye health so they can be seen directly with the naked eye.

This is what makes a lunar eclipse very interesting to enjoy its beauty. However, if you want to see the lunar eclipse more clearly, you need tools such as binoculars or telescopes.

Another thing that makes a lunar eclipse an interesting phenomenon is that this event occurs only in a certain period, namely when the sun, earth, and moon are in a straight line.

Not only that, the lunar eclipses that occur are also different. There are several types of lunar eclipses that occur.

The following is a summary of the types moon eclipse along with an explanation, as reported from the page sumberbelajar.belajar.kemdikbud.go.id, Thursday (19/8/2021).

Total/Full Lunar Eclipse

The exact position of the moon is in the umbra area, indicating that it is in a state of total/full eclipse. In this condition, the moon does not look completely dark, it still looks faintly dark reddish because sunlight is still reflected to the moon through the earth’s atmosphere.

During a total lunar eclipse, the moon will appear dark in color, it can be copper red, orange, or brown. This is due to the color spectrum that is deflected by the atmosphere, which is mostly red.

Half Moon Eclipse

A half lunar eclipse is a condition in which the moon is not completely blocked by the earth. Part of the moon enters the penumbra so that there is still part of the moon that is illuminated by sunlight.

This half moon eclipse can still be seen with the naked eye. This event is also not harmful to the eyes, even if seen with the eye without any tools.

However, the beauty of the lunar eclipse can be enjoyed more when viewed using binoculars or a telescope to be able to see more closely and distinguish the boundaries of the dark and bright parts on the moon’s surface.

Penumbra Lunar Eclipse

A penumbral lunar eclipse is a lunar eclipse that is indicated by the position of the moon which is completely in the penumbra. In this type of eclipse, the moon does not change shape like a total or partial lunar eclipse.

The moon only changes in brightness. Therefore, usually eclipse conditions like this are difficult to see and observe with the naked eye because of their very subtle appearance.
