Two thirds of Chinese imports immediately leave the country NOW

The Netherlands imported 39.2 billion euros worth of goods from China in 2018, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) reported Tuesday. The majority is exported again.

“Approximately two thirds of the goods imported from China, worth 26.3 billion euros, immediately leave the country”, says economist Marjolijn Jaarsma of the CBS.

Statistics Netherlands investigated the import dependence of the Netherlands from, among others, China at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. More than half of the goods that initially remain in the Netherlands, with a value of 12.9 billion euros, also leave the country. But then value has been added in the Netherlands.

“Those products are then exported to the US, among others,” says Jaarsma. Of the goods that come from China to the Netherlands, 5.2 billion euros go directly to the stores to find their way to the consumer. Dutch imports from China have grown considerably in recent decades. “Much harder than total goods imports.”

In 1988, goods imports from China accounted for only 0.5 percent of the total, by 2018 this had risen to 8.9 percent.
