Two schools in Tyrol closed due to flu

Two elementary schools in Tyrol had to be temporarily closed because more than a third of the pupils contracted flu. In Vomperbach (Schwaz district) 24 out of 49 children were affected, in Schönberg (Innsbruck-Land district) 20 out of 58 children, the state said on Tuesday. The schools should remain closed until the weekend as a precaution.

The State Medical Directorate continued to recommend vaccination against the flu. “Children are less likely to be vaccinated against influenza, which is why the viruses can spread more quickly in schools and subsequently also lead to infections within the family of non-vaccinated people,” said Anita Luckner-Hornischer from the State Medical Directorate.

Appropriate hand hygiene and a “cough-sneezing mustache label” can also prevent infection. “You should cough or sneeze in the elbow, turning away from other people. The hands should be washed several times a day with soap under running water for at least 20 seconds, because the viruses are also transmitted through the palms of the hands, ”said Luckner-Hornischer. Anyone suffering from influenza should stay at home and recover.

The number of people suffering from flu in Vienna rose in comparison to the previous week. According to figures published by the flu reporting service on Tuesday, around 11,100 people (fluctuation range plus / minus 1,150) are currently affected. That is 3,100 cases more than a week ago. The flu wave has the federal capital increasingly under control. The corresponding statistical curve has been going up significantly for several weeks. At the beginning of the year, for example, only 4,200 sufferers were registered.
