TÉLUQ University and the University of Quebec in Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT) will allow students to continue their studies remotely to obtain either a master’s degree in preschool education and primary education, or a master’s degree in secondary education, mathematical concentrations and French.
These courses are aimed at people who are already employed by schools, but who do not have a teaching certificate. They were developed with the Marguerite-Bourgeoys school service center in Montreal.
The number of unqualified teachers continues to increase in schools across the province. According to the Ministry of Education, 3,757 teachers were not legally qualified in 2020-2021, three times more than five years earlier.
A qualifying master’s degree to become a primary school teacher already exists at the University of Montreal. However, access is heavily restricted. Last fall, out of 942 applications, only 275 students were admitted.
