They are only 14 years old, but seem to have a bright future in the scientific world. Two young Indian schoolgirls have just distinguished themselves by discovering a new asteroid.

The “All India Asteroid Search Campaign” program was launched in India, and is receiving support from NASA. It is in this context that two young students, Vaidehi Vekariya and Radhika Lakhan, discovered a new asteroid. It received the provisional name of HLV2514. According to the scientists who supervise them, this is a major discovery, even if HLV2514 does not represent a threat to Earth.

The two students made this discovery by analyzing images captured by the Pan-Starrs telescope, installed in Hawaii. The near-Earth object is currently near Mars. It should cross Earth’s orbit, but not for a million years. More experienced scientists have taken over to confirm its orbit.

One of the two young girls has already announced her wish to become an astronaut in the future.
