Two DJs make music for the homeless in Berlin

What do the homeless need most urgently in winter? Very few would think about music. The Berlin DJ duo Knicki und Kröte wants to help people on the street with party hits, of all things. With an old fire truck that has been converted into a mobile disco – the “Freuwilligen Feierwehr” – they will be driving through Berlin this year on Christmas and New Year’s Eve, distributing aid, food and drinks. But they also celebrate with the homeless, fulfill musical wishes, hold conversations.

“We want to bring positive energy onto the street,” explains Jörg Strombach, alias DJ Kröte, about the action, “Homeless people are often insulted, spat at, or worse on the street. But then we come by two flitz beeps with music boxes and ask what song they want. And really everyone has one. “

The two men around 50 call themselves “the worst DJs in the world” and play “the worst of the 70s, 80s, 90s and today”. Strombach calls the alter egos “superhero costumes that we put on to do nonsense and do good”. The many partners with whom they cooperate, such as the Karuna social cooperative, stand for the fact that the help is meant seriously.

Online donation party on Saturday from 9 p.m.

“We asked them what the most urgent need of the homeless right now,” reports Strombach. The answer: sleeping bags and food vouchers. The two DJs collect both with their emergency call #KeinSchlafOhneSack. Anyone who would like to support them can drop off sleeping bags at the Hotel Michelberger on Warschauer Strasse. Or celebrate at an online donation party.

On this Saturday, the two DJs will host an interactive and free show from 9 p.m. www.iss.show/dissco-xmas. “Those willing to party can shake off the stress of the week for three hours with live music on two virtual floors and at the same time provide human warmth,” promise the organizers. 100 percent of all donations go to the homeless.
