Two Cases of Monkeypox Discovered in Southern China’s Guangzhou

Today, Sunday, the Chinese health authorities announced that they had discovered two cases of monkeypox in the city of Guangzhou, in southern China’s Guangdong Province, and they were isolated for treatment.

“Two cases of monkeypox virus were identified in Guangzhou on June 10, two men aged 43 and 29,” the regional center for disease control and prevention said in a statement.

The center added that the health authorities decided to isolate them and they are being treated in a specialized hospital, noting that they are suffering from mild symptoms of the disease.

Earlier this week, the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that two cases of monkeypox had been recorded in the Chinese capital, one of the two cases being imported, and the second was infected as a result of close contact with the first.

The World Health Organization had earlier canceled the public health emergency, which was declared in August 2022 due to the outbreak of monkeypox.
