Twitter is closing its experimental CoTweets feature starting today

Twitter launched its experimental “CoTweets” feature in July 2022 to give users a tool to “tweet together” and compose the same tweet. This CoTweets feature is unfortunately quietly disappearing.

The announcement of the closure was published after the fact in the Twitter help pages relayed by Mashable, where the CoTweets feature is explained. It is explained there that the test will no longer be available starting today, January 31, 2023.

Additionally, already created CoTweets can be viewed for an additional month, after which they will be converted to regular Retweets. The team also said thatit will continue to look for ways to implement this functionality in the future and that all comments received so far have been appreciated.

This decision is not surprising considering that since Elon Musk took control of the platform, many features of Twitter have been changed or removed in order to make the page load faster. timeline. Musk himself has repeatedly complained about how slowly Twitter loads, and the answer has almost always come from Twitter having too many superfluous elements.

While this is a nifty little feature, CoTweets didn’t really take off either. It was a feature used primarily by influencers and brands for marketing purposes, not a core part of the Twitter experience. Instead, Twitter has focused on adding other features such as “For You” and “Followers” tabs on mobile and web, as well as Twitter Blue features yet to be launched, such as priority tweets and a reduced amount of ads.

A feature not for everyone

I wonder if the lack of personnel is not also, at least partly, responsible for the sudden disappearance of this functionality. Twitter has seen many challenges since the change in ownership and one of them has been the massive layoffs that have left the company operating with a skeleton team.

Hopefully, Twitter regains its footing and can start delivering on all of its feature promises.
