Twitch Watch Parties let you watch Amazon shows and movies with friends

Twitch Watch Parties let you watch Amazon Prime Video shows and movies with your favorite creators.
On Tuesday, Twitch rolled out the Watch Party feature for everyone, which means if you have a Twitch account and a Prime membership, you can host a Watch Party today.

Twitch Watch Parties are currently only available on desktops, but mobile support is ongoing.

Twitch has been testing Watch Parties on its platform for almost a year, but on Wednesday the feature was finally rolled out to everyone. If you have an Amazon Prime or Prime Video account, you can now watch your favorite shows and movies on Twitch while streaming to your fans or alongside your favorite creators on their streams.

The concept of online surveillance parties has always been appealing, but once the coronavirus pandemic forced us all inside, their usefulness became much more evident. Getting together with your friends or family comes with a certain degree of risk no matter where you live, but with an online surveillance night, you don’t have to worry about whether someone is infected or not. Testing for Watch Parties started last October, but now everyone has access to the feature.

Unsurprisingly, Watch Parties on Twitch – which is owned by Amazon – only supports Amazon Prime Video content. So if you want to watch Netflix or Hulu with your friends, you are going to need another app. That said, this feature is built right into the Twitch platform, which means it should be relatively easy to use.

If you want to host a Watch Party on Twitch for fans, friends, or strangers, here are the steps:

Add the Watch Parties quick action to your stream manager on Twitch
Connect Watch Parties to your Amazon Prime or Prime Video account
Choose the Prime Video movie or TV show you want to watch
Go live with your webcam and microphone
Click on “Start Watch Party” to begin

Twitch was once dominated by game streams, but as the platform has expanded its reach, the variety of creators on the platform has also grown. Some are streaming games, but others just want to interact with the community while drawing, cosplaying, or craving with The Boys. Speaking of which, the launch of Watch Parties couldn’t have come at a better time, with The Boys season 2 debuting on Prime Video this Friday.

In case we haven’t made it clear above, everyone who participates in a Watch Party, from viewers to streamers, must have an active Amazon Prime or Prime Video account. If you’re trying to join a Watch Party stream on Twitch, you’ll be prompted to sign in to your Amazon account to authorize your device. It’s also worth noting that Watch Parties are only available on desktops, but mobile viewing is expected to roll out in the coming months.
