Twilight Jumbo Jets. Their largest operator has taken them out of service

“We can now confirm with great sadness that we are proposing to remove all Boeing 747s from our fleet with immediate effect. Given the decline in passenger traffic due to the global coronavirus epidemic, it is unlikely that our stunning ‘queen of the skies’ will ever return to commercial British Airways operations, ”an airline spokesman told the BBC.

British Airways, owned by the International Airlines Group (IAG), owns 31 Boeing 747 aircraft, representing approximately ten percent of the total number of aircraft operated. The airlines planned to shut down the Jumbo Jets in 2024, but this plan was eventually accelerated given the current situation.

They switch to more modern machines

British Airways’ predecessor, BOAC, has operated the Boeing 747 since the early 1970s. Currently, British Airways used the Boeing 747-400, which is a long-range version. To date, Boeing has delivered a total of 1,556 Boeing 747s to airlines around the world, the last order for this machine received by the manufacturer two years ago. In February 2019, this type of aircraft celebrated 50 years in the sky.

The British air carrier announced that it will operate more flights on more modern aircraft with lower fuel consumption. This will get more to the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787.
