Turkish Main Opposition Party Secures Resounding Victory in Local Elections, Delivering President Erdogan’s Worst Defeat Amid Economic Crisis

Turkey’s Main Opposition Party Wins Resounding Victory in Local Elections

BIGGEST DEFEAT FOR ERDOGAN

Turkey’s main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), achieved a resounding victory in Sunday’s local elections, stunning President Recep Tayyip Erdogan with his worst political defeat to date. The election results reflect the deep anger felt by voters amid a crippling economic crisis that has plagued the country. According to unofficial results, the CHP garnered a nationwide lead of 37.7 percent, surpassing Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) which secured 35.5 percent, with 99.8 percent of the ballots counted, as reported by the state-run Anadolu news agency.

A LANDMARK WIN

The local elections, which included races for mayors and local council seats, mark a historic victory for the CHP as it is the first time in over two decades that the party achieves a national triumph during Erdogan’s lengthy leadership. The election outcome establishes a stunning reversal of fortunes for the CHP, following the party’s defeat by Erdogan in the presidential race less than a year ago, which had left the opposition in disarray.

UNEASE IN ERDOGAN’S CAMP

In reaction to Sunday’s results, Erdogan notably appeared humbled, as his ruling party suffered from key defections and the opposition made significant gains even in conservative areas that had traditionally supported the president. Erdogan acknowledged the party’s loss of momentum throughout the country and expressed the need for self-criticism to better understand the election results.

ISTANBUL: THE PRIZED PRIZE

Imamoglu, the incumbent CHP mayor, secured an impressive victory over his ruling-party rival in Istanbul, the country’s most populous city with 16 million residents and the cornerstone of Erdogan’s political career. Unofficial results indicate Imamoglu won by over one million votes. This latest triumph further solidifies his standing as one of the most formidable challengers to the Turkish president, only five years after he seized Istanbul’s mayorship from the AKP’s decades-long control.

AN END TO AUTHORITARIANISM?

While Imamoglu’s campaign focused on local issues such as the revitalization of Istanbul and earthquake preparedness, his victory speech on Sunday masterfully targeted Erdogan’s increasingly authoritarian rule. Imamoglu declared the end of democratic erosion in Turkey, asserting that the people repressed under authoritarian regimes are now turning their hopes to Istanbul.

A THUMPING VICTORY

The CHP’s success extended to 35 out of the country’s 81 provinces, ensuring control over the five largest cities in Turkey. The party’s victory raises questions about the missed opportunity in the previous presidential race and the breakup of an opposition alliance. Notably, in Istanbul, supporters of a major Kurdish opposition party opted to vote for Imamoglu, despite running their own mayoral candidate.

DECISIVE ECONOMIC ISSUES

Erdogan’s limited handling of the country’s faltering economy played a pivotal role in his party’s loss. With households reeling from rampant inflation and a sharp devaluation of the currency, the economy became the prevailing concern for voters. Although Erdogan established a highly-regarded economic team and permitted the Central Bank to raise interest rates to their highest level in decades, inflation remains stubbornly high at approximately 70 percent.
