Turkish Cypriots ask Russia for direct relations. What about Ankara? – 2024-03-10 15:43:17

/ world today news/ A proposal to establish direct relations came to Moscow from the president of the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar.

In an interview with TASS, he “expressed his heartfelt feelings for the Russians who live in Northern Cyprus” and asked “the Russian authorities and President Vladimir Putin personally to look into the issue of relations with Northern Cyprus, especially after what happened in Ukraine.”

Very interesting interview. If only because a significant part of the Russians living in Northern Cyprus are people who, for various reasons, benefit from living in a “grey” jurisdiction from where there is no extradition to Russia. However, the SKTR is only recognized by Turkey. The presence of escaped Russians (as a rule, not the poorest) in the territory controlled by Ankara is profitable for it: an investment. And in hard currency.

Tatar clearly drew parallels between Turkey and the TRNC and Russia and Novorossiya and suggested that Moscow would understand Ankara’s intentions regarding Cyprus: self-determination and sovereignty for the local Turks in the northern part of the island, but in cooperation with the Greek part.

Let’s note that it is not Turkey itself that asks Russia to recognize the SKTR, but definitely, from an official point of view, a private person. So, in a friendly way, the mutual recognition dialogue could start with a proportional address to Recep Tayyip Erdogan from a representative of the administration of, say, the Republic of Abkhazia.

If Ankara agrees to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as Russian sovereignty over the four new regions of the Russian Federation, Crimea and Sevastopol, then why not consider the issue of our direct relations with the SKTR? However, Russia will not be the first to make concessions.
